Und welche Rolle spielt der Körper in diesen Akten der Spekulation? Gheorghe wählt verschiedene Methoden und Formen, um diesen Fragen nachzugehen. Methods for the Study of What Is Not There verweist auf die Entfremdung, die durch die Erfahrung von Abwesenheit ausgelöst wird und unterstreicht die Unzulänglichkeit und Ungenauigkeit der Darstellungsformen.
Die Publikation bietet zusätzliche Informationen zu Irina Gheorghes Arbeit und macht insbesondere ihre Performances denjenigen zugänglicher, die sie bisher nicht live erfahren konnten. Wie Gheorghes Werk sind auch die Textbeiträge durch zeitliche oder räumliche Distanz gekennzeichnet und verweisen auf etwas Abwesendes. Maeve Connollys Text beschreibt eine Aufführung von Gheorghes Performance Preliminary Remarks on the Study of What Is Not There im Project Arts Centre in Dublin im Januar 2020. Das Gespräch zwischen Irina Gheorghe und Marie-France Rafael gibt vertiefende Einblicke in Gheorghes Arbeit. Ausgangspunkt des Gesprächs war eine Ausstellung und Performance im Rumänischen Kulturinstitut in Berlin, an der Rafael nicht teilnehmen konnte. Neben einer Einführung der Kuratorin Nadja Quante und den oben genannten Texten präsentiert Methods for the Study of What Is Not There Fotografien und eine Auswahl aus neuen sogenannten „Tape-Drawings“ der Künstlerin.

The book is published on the occasion of Irina Gheorghe’s eponymous solo exhibition at Künstlerhaus Bremen, in which various elements of her long-term research project on imperceptible realities are brought together for the first time. How can we refer to things and worlds that are unobservable or intangible? How do we talk about spaces or things that we cannot perceive? And what role does the body take in these acts of speculation? Gheorghe chooses different methods and forms to investigate these questions. Her work refers to the alienation triggered by the experience of absence and reinforces the inadequacy and imprecision of the forms of representation.
This publication offers additional information on Irina Gheorghe’s work and, in particular, makes her performances more accessible to those who have not previously been able to experience them live. Like Gheorghe‘s work, the text contributions are also characterized by temporal or spatial distance and refer to something absent. Maeve Connolly’s text describes a staging of Gheorghe’s performance Preliminary Remarks on the Study of What Is Not There at the Project Arts Centre in Dublin in January 2020. The conversation between Gheorghe and Marie-France Rafael provides in-depth insight into the artist’s work and began from an exhibition and performance at the Romanian Cultural Institute in Berlin that Rafael was unable to attend. Alongside an introduction by curator Nadja Quante and the texts mentioned above, Methods for the Study of What Is Not There presents photographs and a selection from new so-called “tape drawings” by the artist.
