This volume combines a symposium on the work of Silke Otto-Knapp (1970–2022) with her exhibition Bühnenbilder. Since the mid-1990s, Otto-Knapp pursued a unique approach that responded to and reflected on formal and thematic questions of representation and embodiment in the performing arts in the medium of painting.

The exhibition centred on Otto-Knapps’s cycle of works Versammlung (2022), which was created for the Kunstverein in Hamburg during the artist’s lifetime. Focusing on forms of ritualised gathering on stage, she explored the history of theatre, dance and film. Versammlung was placed in dialogue with her works from the last ten years.

This explored the formal development from individual works to panel paintings to painting as architecture in a space-filling, wall-less choreography that the artist had developed for the Kunstverein.

Der Band verbindet ein Symposium zur Arbeit von Silke Otto-Knapp (1970–2022) mit ihrer Ausstellung Bühnenbilder. Otto-Knapp verfolgte seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre einen einzigartigen Ansatz, der auf formale und thematische Fragen der Darstellung und Verkörperung performativer Künste im Medium der Malerei reagierte und diese reflektierte.

Im Zentrum der Ausstellung stand Otto-Knapps Werkzyklus Versammlung (2022), der zu Lebzeiten der Künstlerin für den Kunstverein in Hamburg entstand. Mit Fokus auf Formen der ritualisierten Versammlung auf der Bühne setzte sie sich darin mit der Geschichte des Theaters, des Tanzes und des Filmes auseinander. Versammlung wurde mit ihren Arbeiten der letzten zehn Jahre in Dialog gesetzt.

Dadurch wurde die formale Entwicklung vom Einzelwerk über das Tafelbild bis hin zur Malerei als Architektur in einer raumgreifenden, wandlosen Choreografie erkundet, welche die Künstlerin für den Kunstverein entwickelt hatte.
